Northern Albania — 5-Day Expedition

5 Days 4 Nights

Northern Albania — 5-Day Expedition is a private journey through the country’s alpine north, combining mountain roads, traditional villages, lake landscapes and flexible outdoor experiences. It is designed for travellers who want to see more than a single destination and understand how Theth, Koman, the Drin valleys and northern communities connect.

The route is planned around your dates, group and preferred activity level. Weather and seasonal access can change quickly in the Albanian Alps, so the final sequence is confirmed close to departure with realistic driving times and suitable transport.

Northern Albania tour highlights

  • Theth and the dramatic peaks of the Albanian Alps
  • Scenic travel through Shkodër and the northern valleys
  • Lake Koman and the turquoise water of the Shala River region
  • Mountain viewpoints, waterfalls and optional walks
  • Local guesthouse culture, regional food and village stories
  • Private planning with local support before and during the journey

Suggested five-day itinerary

Day 1 — Tirana to Shkodër and the northern gateway

Travel north from Tirana toward Shkodër. Explore the city’s history, lake setting and role as the gateway to the Albanian Alps. The day is paced to allow useful orientation before entering the mountains.

Day 2 — Into Theth

Continue toward Theth through a landscape of high passes and limestone peaks. On arrival, discover the village, its stone houses and surrounding valley. Short walks can be selected according to the group, weather and daylight.

Day 3 — Theth landscapes and local life

Spend a full day in the valley. Options may include Grunas Waterfall, viewpoints, village heritage or a longer hike for active travellers. The programme remains flexible because trail and river conditions vary through the season.

Day 4 — Mountain road and Lake Koman region

Leave Theth on the best available route and continue toward the Koman area. This is a journey day with rewarding scenery, small communities and stops that are difficult to combine without local planning.

Day 5 — Koman or Shala experience and return

Subject to seasonal schedules, the final day can include a boat experience on Lake Koman or toward the Shala River before returning south. The exact departure point and timing are confirmed with the final itinerary.

Travel style and difficulty

This expedition works well for couples, families and small private groups comfortable with mountain roads and several travel days. It can be made more active with hiking or kept more relaxed with shorter walks and additional cultural stops. It is not a technical climbing trip.

What will be confirmed before booking

Your proposal will clearly list transport, driver or guide services, accommodation, meals, boat tickets, entrance fees, activities, pickup arrangements, payment terms and exclusions. Do not rely on a fixed online timetable for mountain transport; seasonal operations and weather can affect the route.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a private northern Albania tour?

It can be organised privately and adjusted to your dates, interests and group size. Ask for current availability and the travel format that suits you.

Is a 4×4 always required for Theth?

Vehicle choice depends on the agreed route, season and road conditions. Main access has improved, but alternative mountain roads and winter conditions may require higher clearance or 4×4 capability.

What is the best season?

Late spring through early autumn offers the broadest access and activity choice. Shoulder seasons are quieter, while winter travel needs a more flexible programme.
